Hi all. Happy Spring! Oh how I missed Springtime (... I live in the tropics now). I saw this gorgeous looking bird @ City Crafter Challenge Blog and I immediately thinking about Springtime. Inspired me to create something floral and sweet. The image fits perfectly as the main theme for another altered project (altering an old IKEA clock).
The gorgeous yellow bird image from Graphics Fairies LLC collection.
And so I made this;
I used an old, rusty clock that no longer works as the base of my project. I 'prep'ed the clock with black gesso, green & pink acrylic paints, decoupaged and stamped lace images. Then I started decorating the clock face with bird, flowers and mood-lifting words :).
I had fun making this one. It really brought back great memories. First days of Spring in Colorado, when apple trees blooming pink & white blossoms. Clear blue sky. Cool breeze. BLISS.
Happy creating everyone.
XO,
Shahrul.

DeleteThis is beautiful! You are so talented :)
ReplyDeleteThis might be a silly question but...does it have to be black gesso paint or could it be another colour or even a different type of primer?
Sarah x
Hi, Sarah :). Any primer will do. I just love using black gesso as primer because when paint acrylic over it, I'll get a sort of a deeper color of that overcoat. I'll guess, if you don't have a black gesso, you may try use black acryllic paint as the first coat?. Hope this help.
ReplyDeleteThank you for your help :)
ReplyDeleteI'll try black acrylic paint to begin with. How did you get the aged look after you'd painted it?
Sorry for all the questions! My mum saw your beautiful clock and absolutely fell in love with it, i'm going to attempt to make her something similar, just want to get it right :) x
No problem, Sarah. Actually, the clock was already rusty, old and broken to begin with. I was about to discard it but decided to hold on, maybe primed it black and see what transpired then. Hence, you's still see rust here and there :). If you started brand new, you might want to rough it up a bit, by either sanding the black primer off on the edges, dry-brush painted it with patches of bronze or rust paint over it. Lastly, when painted the top coat paint, paint it not entirely but sparingly, let the dry bristle texture shown here and there, that'll help make the clock looked old. Try see if you can work on some rusty, metal junk in the backyard to try on first, just to get a hang of it. Have fun creating!.
